How to choose a good laptop screen?

2021-08-31

Most people may not notice how important the screen of a laptop is for the daily use experience. We buy laptop value performance, design , battery life, etc., but forget that when we communicate with laptops every moment, Those things are completed through the screen. Therefore, the quality of the screen is the most important and should be focused on

Color spectrum
Color spectrum means the percentage of the color range that your laptop can display in a certain color space. For example, the color spectrum of a screen is 90% sRGB, which means that the color range that the display can display accounts for 90% of the area within the sRGB space. In the same color space, the higher the color gamut, the wider the color range that can be displayed. As we all know, the LCD panel itself does not emit light, but must pass through the backlight light to display the picture. The laptop screen mainly uses the backlight CCFT (cold cathode fluorescent tube) because of their limitations in fluorescent material, weak red light presentation ability, and poor color mixing effect of the matched color filter, The proportion of color gamut in the final presentation is poor, resulting in the lack of color gamut presentation ability of mainstream LCD monitors or TVs, and the color gamut range is only about 65% ~ 75% of NTSC standard. Therefore, generally speaking, the screen that can reach 72% NTSC gamut (≈ 100% srbg gamut) is good (100% srbg gamut is better than 72% NTSC gamut)
Resolution
Is the laptop screen resolution the higher the better? This depends on the actual use needs and feelings. For example, graphic design, panoramic animation, cross page complex file operation, programming and other work need to display as much content as possible on the screen. The high-resolution screen is naturally suitable and can display more content at the same time. However, it should also be noted that in order to improve the product segment, many laptop products provide 2K or 4K resolution for 13 inch or even 11 inch screens, which may be a bit embarrassing on the windows operating system. Because of the scaling mechanism of the windows platform, the display area of the traditional windows software interface is only related to pixels. The higher the pixel density (PPI), the smaller the display area, which leads to the inability to obtain sufficient display area on the ultra-high resolution screen, resulting in obstacles to use. Especially when playing games, high resolution on a small screen is not desirable. In addition, the higher the screen resolution, the greater the test of hardware performance, which may bring a burden to the system when running some high load programs. Therefore, when choosing a laptop, don't blindly pursue the ultra-high definition resolution display. For example, there is no rigid demand for ultra-high definition and it is sensitive to the price. Then the full HD/FHD resolution screen is enough.
Screen type
At present, the main screen types for laptop are TN and IPS. The low visual angle of TN screen leads to poor color restoration, less realistic image quality, and obvious color distortion. The visual angle of IPS screen is generally large, the color restoration is high, and the image quality looks more realistic. Although the visual angle of TN screen is poor, the response speed of TN screen is faster than that of IPS (the general response time of TN screen is about 8ms), IPS is usually about 25 to 40ms), so many games would have used TN screen. The viewing angle of the high-end TN screen is still a little inferior, but the screen quality is not inferior to that of the high-end IPS, so it is said that IPS is not necessarily the best choice, depending on the purpose of the screen.
Contrast ratio
Contrast is an easily ignored parameter(specification)for laptop screen, but it is a decisive factor for the overall picture quality. The higher the contrast is, the clearer the black-and-white contrast is, that is, the text is clearer and sharper when reading. When viewing pictures and videos, the occurrence of too high black brightness can be reduced. Contrast is expressed by ratio, such as 800:1, 1000:1 and 1300:1. Generally speaking, the higher the contrast, the better. It is better to exceed 1300:1
